Laser cataract surgery

Benefits of the Laser Cataract Surgery

The Laser offers three-dimensional, high resolution images that map the unique eyes of each patient. These images, combined with the computer-captured measurements and information about the eyes, allow the surgeon to achieve greater accuracy, precision and customization than ever before.

The Laser is optimized with true image guidance, helping the surgeon determine the best location and dimensions for incisions. The bladeless femtosecond laser pulses to create incisions in the lens capsule, crystalline lens and cornea with a high level of accuracy. The Laser is an effective technological advancement that ensures the highest level of precision throughout every step of the cataract surgical procedure.

Limbal-relaxing Incisions (LRI)

Patients with astigmatism who are undergoing cataract surgery can choose to have limbal-relaxing incisions made to reduce their dependence on glasses for clear vision. Limbal-relaxing incisions are tiny cuts made around the edge of the cornea, called the limbus. These incisions "relax" the cornea's steep curvature and improve the way the eye focuses light. Limbal-relaxing incisions have been shown to heal faster and cause fewer side effects than other astigmatic keratotomy (AK) procedures. There is a limitation to the amount of correction and predictability is less compare to toric Lenses.

Toric Lenses

Some people with astigmatism and cataracts may benefit from the implantation of toric Lenses instead of, or in addition to, limbal-relaxing incisions. Specially designed for patients with pre-existing astigmatism, toric lenses improve vision from cataracts and astigmatism at the same time. Patients enjoy a quick recovery.

Intraocular lenses are used to correct vision problems during cataract surgery by replacing the old, damaged lens with an artificial lens that clears up and corrects vision, often leaving patients with little to no dependence on glasses. While cataract surgery corrects cloudy lenses, it still leaves patients with astigmatism with distorted vision which can be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Â Toric Lenses are specially designed to correct astigmatism along with overall vision during cataract surgery, offering complete vision correction.

Before Toric lenses, people with astigmatism would need to undergo corneal refractive surgery after their lenses were implanted, or would remain dependent on glasses or contact lenses. The advanced Toric Lenses correct the imbalance caused by an irregular cornea shape in patients with astigmatism. There are several different types of Toric Lenses, which can correct up to 10 diopters of astigmatism although some of them are not FDA approved.

The risks of a Toric Lenses include poor vision as a result of the lens rotating out of position. Toric Lenses are considered safe for most patients with astigmatism and are the only solution to correct both cataract and astigmatism vision problems. Talk to your doctor to learn more about these lenses and find out if you can enjoy the benefits of Toric Lenses.
